Burdened but unbowed   

I wanted to look beyond conventional commemorative sculpture to make an image of an unsung heroine. This Mother is shopping not for pleasure but to enable her to feed her kids. For her a bargain is not an incentive but a necessity for which she must search relentlessly day after day so her family will not starve. I glimpsed this lady in a market but she is really an archetype. She has to be a survivor; too many people depend on her for this not to be the case. Indefatigable, burdened, alone but unbowed her dignity serves to underline the heroism of her daily existence with all its hardships. To me this is real heroism which needs recognising.
