Pineapple

Christopher Columbus is thought to have first come across pineapples on the Caribbean island of Guadaloupe in 1493. They quickly became a sensation in Europe on his return. A rare, luxury item they came to symbolise wealth and status. Artists adopted its shape for interior design but perhaps its more iconic use was on gateposts.  This tradition apparently originated because sea captains often staked a fresh pineapple to their fence post to signify that they had returned and wanted their neighbours to visit.
